The Queensland sunshine has beamed its light on the cloudy Clare Valley today, with the 2014 The Barry Bros Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon being awarded the Trophy for Best Shiraz/Cabernet Blend Wine of Show at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show.
“Dad (Peter) presented my brother Sam and I with the opportunity to make a wine that represented the younger generation and we chose to make our mark on the classic Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet,” said Third Generation Family Winemaker, Tom.
“We pick the grapes a bit earlier and as a result we produce a medium bodied wine which is vibrant and juicy. It is the kind of wine that we enjoy drinking and is appealing to younger and older generations alike.”
Giving the wine a modern twist has proved a successful approach for the brothers, with the inaugural 2012 vintage winning gold at the Royal Hobart Wine Show. The 2013 vintage was an even bigger triumph, receiving two trophies for the Best Shiraz/Cabernet Blend Wine of Show Trophy at both the Queensland Royal Food and Wine Show and Royal Melbourne Wine Awards.
“Many winemakers are using alternate varieties to create these new styles of wine, however we have great resources and have created this approachable style by blending two classic varieties – Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the two old war horses of the Australian wine industry,” said Sam.
“Dad has encouraged us to make a wine that represents a more modern Australian winemaking style as well as inspiring us to try and make our next bottle of wine better than the last.”
This announcement comes shortly after Jim Barry was named “Winery of the Year” by leading UK wine writer Matthew Jukes in his 100 Best Australian Wines report 2016/2017, which also featured The Barry Bros Shiraz Cabernet in its prestigious top 100 list.
