Clare Valley

2017 The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon

Named after the settlement now knows as a ‘lost’ township, Benbournie was situated between the towns of Clare and Blyth. The Benbournie is from a single vineyard on our McRae Wood property, planted by Jim Barry in 1964.

First released in 2002, this deep crimson and intensely aromatic wine is flooded with generous dark berry flavours and complemented by very fine, mineralic tannins that add great length and style.

$90.00

Benbournie, in South Australia's Clare Valley, was settled in 1863 by Catholic German friends of local priest, Father Kranewitter. The tiny settlement comprised about 15 mud huts surrounding a Roman Catholic chapel. The small community's optimism was built on copper mining, but the industry's decline signalled its demise before the turn of the century. All that remains today are a few ancient grape vines, fig and almond trees. Jim Barry's friend and gentleman neighbour, Duncan McRae Wood, sold him 70 acres on Benbournie Road in 1964 and, on this prime land, Jim planted his first vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon.
