2021 Spring Farm Block 73 Shiraz

Jim Barry first planted vines on the Spring Farm property in 1977, recognising the importance of cooler, high-altitude sites for growing Riesling and refined styles of Shiraz, Cabernet and Malbec. The Barry family has continued to plant vines on this property over the last five decades and value it for its variety of microclimates which enable these diverse varieties to be grown. The Spring Farm label was introduced to highlight the best individual blocks of the Spring Farm vineyard.

Block 73 Shiraz lies in Spring Farm North, with an altitude of 495 metres and a South-Westerly aspect. It is situated on an outcrop of chocolaty loams over slate. The blackberry pastille fruits, fine muscular structure, and pure mineral-like acidity, together with volume of fruit and tension highlights an attractive elegance and finesse that promises great cellaring potential. The wine is made in the traditional Australian technique. Cool vinification in small open-headed-down stainless-steel fermenters is followed by 14-15 months of maturation in a combination of new (10-20%) and seasoned French oak puncheons (500L).
