Jim Barry Wines receives ‘The Wolf Blass AM BVK Award’

The Barry Family, of Jim Barry Wines, have been recognised for their major contribution to the development, promotion and showcasing of Riesling Style Wine, nationally and around the world.

The family were announced as the winner of the Wolf Blass AM BVK Award at the 21stCanberra International Riesling Challenge on Friday 14thOctober.

In determining the award, it was noted that Jim Barry Rieslings have recorded the majority of trophies over the last decade at competitions throughout Australia.

Joining an eminent list of past winners, which includes Peter Lehmann AM, Brian Barry OAM and John Vickery OAM, the family were thrilled to receive such a prestigious award.

Third generation winemaker, Tom Barry, said “many of the past winners are people that have inspired me throughout my winemaking journey, so it is truly and honour to be named alongside them.”

“Making Riesling in the Clare Valley is an incredible privilege. I am grateful to my parents and grandparents for their hard work and foresight, which has afforded us the opportunity to make this wonderful variety,” said Tom.

For Peter Barry, to be honoured by Wolf Blass AM BVK, is especially significant. His father, the late Jim Barry, and Wolf were good friends in life and business. Indeed, Blass’ first small bottling of 1973 Riesling came from fruit bought from Jim Barry.

“Wolf Blass is a legend of the Australian wine industry and the legacy he has created through the Wolf Blass Foundation Inc. is something to be admired.” Peter said. “The relationship between my father and Wolf began in 1962 and I have many wonderful memories of him visiting us in Clare. He has been a wonderful friend and mentor to me, and it was a privilege to stand beside him and receive this award, which recognises the hard work of my family over 60 years.”
