2014 Spring Farm Block 114 Riesling

Jim Barry first planted vines on the Spring Farm Farm property in 1977, recognising the importance of cooler, high altitude sites for growing Riesling and refined styles of Shiraz, Cabernet and Malbec. The Barry family has continued to plant vines on this property over the last five decades and value it for its variety of micro climates which enable these diverse varieties to be grown. The Spring Farm wines are released after ten years to highlight the beautiful characters that come to the fore with age.

Block 114 Riesling is situated in the southwest corner of Spring Farm, the parcel of land purchased by Brian Barry in 1977, but reacquired by Jim Barry Wines in 2006. The 1977-planted vines are grown down the hill at 470 metres and located on chocolatey loams over water-holding clay. The vineyard is dry grown, and the grapes reach maturity early. Typically, the wines are fragrant, lean and tight with a core of lime and fresh, long mineral-like acidity. This also leads to a wine with relatively low alcohols of around 10 to 11% ABV.
